Apart from examining certain traditional and longstanding conflicts in the Eastern Mediterranean, e.g. the Greek-Turkish dispute, emphasis in the seminar rests in the role certain systemic and institutional agents play in the Mediterranean subsystem. To this end, the seminar discusses the post-Cold War (especially the post-9\/11) global and regional security environment and the subsequent broadening and deepening of the notion of security; the evolution of particular new threats and challenges and their inter-linkages, i.e. climate change, forced migration, WMD, organized crime, piracy, religious radicalism, terrorism (ISIS\/ISIL) etc.. It also examines the role of NATO and EU in the management of the Greek-Turkish conflict as well as the role of energy issues in creating conditions of stability and\/or instability in the turbulent Mediterranean region.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>Aims of Course<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The course aims to acquaint students with the main security threats facing the Mediterranean region as well as the domestic and external efforts to mitigate these challenges.
