The Department of Mediterranean Studies is offering the reformed postgraduate course “Governance, development and security in the Mediterranean” effective for the academic year 2014-2015, in accordance with the regulations number: 24518/Β7/6.5.2004 (GG 753 Β΄ 19.5.2004) of the ministerial decree and the regulations of Ν. 3685/2008 (GG 148 Α΄), as it has been modified and is now applied.

The aim of this program is to offer the participants, the education, production and communication of knowledge, expertise and methodological tools of analysis of the complex political, social, economic and geopolitical reality of the broader Mediterranean. More specifically, the aim of this course is to offer theoretical and methodological education of high standard, with emphasis on the specialized knowledge of the political, social and economic development in the region of the Mediterranean, so as its graduates may attempt to make their next steps, with dignity, in the domestic and/or foreign professional and academic field.

The programme will be awarding a Master of Αrts in “Governance, development and security in the Mediterranean” upon the successful completion of two (2) semesters and the successful presentation of a dissertation during the third semester of studies.

Graduates from both Greek and foreign Institutions are accepted after a strict process of selection. The courses are taught in Greek but can also be taught in English.

The course duration is set to three (3) academic semesters, two (2) semesters with taught modules and one (1) semester for research, all of which are obligatory. Each module consists of three (3) teaching hours per week with the semester adding up to ten (10) to thirteen (13) weeks. Any modification to the schedule of the course is subject to the approval of the board of the General Assembly in its Special Composition.

Modules consist of obligatory and elective ones. More specifically, four(4) obligatory and four (4) elective from the eight(8) modules offered. The elective modules are only taught with a minimum participation of five (5) students. Teaching and evaluation of the courses is carried out in Greek, without exempting the English language in some modules. The third semester is dedicated to the writing of a dissertation which is a prerequisite for the completion of this postgraduate course.

The total of ECTS credits required for the completion of this course amounts to 90 credits, in combination with the student’s involvement in the educational and researching activities of the program. Each module is credited with 7.5 ECTS credits whereas the dissertation amounts to thirty (30) credits.

At the end of the programme, a successful graduate will be able to:

(KNOWLEDGE AND UNDERSTANDING)

  •  thoroughly understand core concepts and approaches in governance, development and security and their relationship to each other;
  • demonstrate advanced understanding of several areas of governance, development and security in the Mediterranean (including awareness of the most important issues, contemporary theories and practices, key uncertainties, and practical complexities and dilemmas);
  • understand the process of research and knowledge production in a selected geopolitical topic in the wider Mediterranean region (including identifying a suitable problem statement and research questions, relevant academic and professional literature, and appropriate methods).

(SKILLS)

  • analyze and critically evaluate contemporary theory and practice in a range of geopolitical fields;
  • contribute to production of professional and academic knowledge and improvement of practice in selected fields of governance, development and security;
  • communicate complex geopolitical knowledge effectively both orally and in writing to professional and academic audiences, using appropriate communication standards;
  • organize effective independent work in governance, development and security in the Mediterranean region.
