Greek- Turkish Relations and the Cyprus Question

This course analyses Greece’s relations with Turkey from the Treaty of Lausanne to the present day. In this context, particular emphasis is initially placed on the Lausanne Treaty (1923), explaining the reasons that led Greece and Turkey to seek understanding and cooperation during the 1930s and the first years after the Second World War. The importance of the Cyprus issue in the historical development of Greek-Turkish relations from the 1950s onwards, culminating in the Turkish invasion of Cyprus (1974), is highlighted. Finally, Greek-Turkish relations after 1974, the crises of 1976, 1987 and 1996, Cyprus’ accession to the EU and the Annan Plan in 2004 and the problems that still overshadow them are reviewed.
